At an early age, Adam’s parents divorced. He attended Barrow Hill Junio4 School where he played boxing as well as cricket. He then moved to St Marylebone Grammar School where he played rugby, and became a school prefect. After matriculating, he attended Hornsey College of Art to study graphic design. However, he dropped out of school to pursue a career in music.

After leaving school he renamed himself Adam Ant and started reconnecting with acquaintances in the music industry. His first band was Bazooka Joe in which he played bass guitar, then he formed The Ants in 1977, performing in several clubs. They would soon change their name to Adam and the Ants, and become a part of the punk rock movement, appearing around London and then around the UK, but generally without much of a following. In 1979, they released their debut album entitled “Dirk Wears White Sox” with minimal success.

After trying his hand being managed by Malcolm McLaren, he formed a new Adam and the Ants with two drummers. They signed with CBS Records and would record “Kings of the Wild Frontier”, which proved to be highly popular, and increased his net worth significantly. The band became part of the New Romantic movement, and in 1981 they released the album “Prince Charming”, which was another big success. However, in the next year, the group disbanded after Ant felt that the band was lacking enthusiasm, but remained partnered with Marco Pirroni.

Ant started a solo career, and released “Friend or Foe” which produced a top 10 single. He formed a new band to tour with, and would then tour the US. He also performed as a guest of “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever”, and his work on new material led to his second solo album – “Strip” – which would lead to recognition of his new four-piece band. In 1985, he paused in his music career to foray into acting, with his next project not appearing until the 1990’s -“Manners & Physique” – which was a moderate success. Five years later, he then released the album “Wonderful” which had a successful title track, and toured with Pirroni around the US to promote the album, This lead him to write two more songs in 1996, and they also made guest appearances with other bands.

In the 2000s, he was part of several issues including being arrested after throwing a car alternator through a pub window. He was also arrested after conflicts with a neighbor which saw him fined, and psychiatric care charges. In 2003, the television special entitled “The Madness of Prince Charming” was released, detailing his struggle with mental illness, but he also published his autobiography “Stand & Deliver” three years later. He returned to music in 2010 though he had to return to hospital by mid-year. Afterwards, he would perform in some smaller events, but undertook a successful UK tour. One of his latest projects is a new album released in 2013.

For his personal life, it is known that Adam married Carol Mills in 1975 but their marriage ended in divorce shortly after. He also had relationships with Amanda Donohoe, Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Graham. In 1997 he married a PR assistant of Vivienne Westwood; they had a daughter but separated afterwards. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when 21, which he now discusses quite openly, and may be a part cause of his sometimes erratic behavior.
