When he was younger, Overeem competed in multiple sports including basketball, judo and track and field. At the age of 15, he started training in an MMA gym to learn self-defense. He did not initially like the sport, but eventually decided to fully commit to it.

At the age of 19, Alistair had his first professional fight and won via a submission. He got a 10-3 record in several promotions before debuting in Pride Fighting Championships in 2002. In his debut match there, he secured a TKO over Yusuke Imamura just 44 seconds into the fight. He would win two more fights before joining the 2003 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix. He lost to Chuck Liddell in the quarter-final match, but soon rebounded with a win against Tomohiko Hashimoto. At Pride 28, he would defeat Hiromitsu Kanehara, but would lose his next fight against Antonio Nogueira. In 2005, he joined the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix and would go on to win more matches, although losing in the semi-finals against Mauricio Rua. He joined 2006’s Openweight Grand Prix, but lost in the second round.

After this loss, he made his debut in Strikeforce, battling against Vitor Belfort in the Strikeforce: Revenge main event. He would win the match and then return to PRIDE for a rematch against Antonio Nogueria, however, his corner threw in the towel because of their concern for injuries after two rounds. He would sustain a few more losses in his next fights before returning to Strikeforce, and later won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship by defeating Paul Buentello. He was scheduled to defend his title against Brett Rogers but an injury changed the plans for the fight. He would then schedule his first defense against Fabricio Werdrum, but the fight was also cancelled due to an injury. After winning two more fights, he would defend his title in 2010’s Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery against Brett Rogers. He won via TKO in the first round and would later win the DREAM Heavyweight Championship at Dynamite!! 2010.

He was soon released from Strikeforce due to disagreements with management, but signed a contract with the UFC and was then scheduled to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. He defeated Lesnar in the event, but the fight was controversial due to Overeem being accused of using steroids. After more drug tests, he was revealed to have failed the test and his title opportunity was cancelled. In 2013, he returned to face Antonio Silva in UFC 156 and lost via TKO. He would win most of his fights in the next two years, and then signed another contract with the UFC. He would win a fight against Andrei Arlovski in UFC Fight Night 87 and then lose against Stipe Miocic.

For his personal life, it is known that Alistair has two daughters, but details of any relationships are lacking. He has also had several legal issues in the past, mostly involving altercations in public. He’s been charged with misdemeanor battery and once had to cancel a fight due to a club brawl.
