Babe Ruth was one of eight children (only he and his sister survived) born to George Sr. and Kate. George Jr. Thus, he was raised with his sister in a relatively poor family, which owned a tavern. He became very problematic, as he started to smoke and drink, so his parents decided to send him to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys at the age of seven, a Catholic orphanage and reformatory, where he spent 12 years. While he was there, an older boy taught him to play baseball, and he excelled at it. Ruth played in the positions of hitter and pitcher, and thanks to his skills was spotted by Jack Dunn, the owner of the Baltimore Orioles, a minor league team at that time.

Ruth’s career began in 1914, signing his first contract with the Baltimore Orioles, before he was brought into the Boston Red Sox squad the same year. He started his career as a pitcher, but became a noted batter, and had a few successful seasons, winning three World Series with the Red Sox, and was thehome run leader for the 1918 and 1919 seasons. Furthermore he was the ERA leader for 1916, and was the AL RBI leader for 1919 season. Thanks to his successful plays, Ruth’s net worth began to rise, and signing new contract which would give him $20,000 for two years.

He was sold to the New York Yankees in 1920 for $100,000, which was the highest amount paid for a baseball player at the time. Upon arrival, Ruth demanded an increase in salary, and was given a bonus of $20,000 throughout the season.

He stayed with the Yankees for 15 seasons, and became one of the greatest players in the franchise history. With the Yankees, he won four World Series in 1923, 1927, 1928, and 1932, and was selected for the All-Star games twice, in 1933 and 1934. In 1924, Ruth was named as the AL MVP, and was the batting champion for the season. To speak further of his accomplishments, he was five times AL RBI leader in 1920, 1921, 1923, 1926, and 1928.

Before he retired, Ruth played for the Boston Braves for one season, which also increased his net worth. He was never considered by a coaching or managerial position in baseball, because of his somewhat lax lifestyle, however, thanks to his successful career as a player, Ruth was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
