Barry James Melrose was born on the 15th July 1956, in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, Canada, and is a former professional hockey player, who played for such teams as the Springfield Indians of the AHL, Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA, Winnipeg Jets of the NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. His playing career was active from 1974 until 1987, then after retirement Barry started his coaching career, and now serves as a commentator for the ESPN and NHL Networks as well.

Barry is the son of Norrie and her husband James Melrose; other details about his early life and education are unknown in the media.
His first professional hockey team was the Kamloops Chiefs of the WHCL, for whom he played in the defense man position in the 1974-1975 and 1975-1976 seasons. After that, he joined the Springfield Indians, and stayed for half of the 1976-1977 season, before he became a part of the Cincinnati Stingers.
