After graduating, O’Brien got his first coaching position at his alma mater in 1993, coaching tight ends; the following year he started coaching inside linebackers. Afterwards, he moved to Georgia Tech for the next three seasons as an offensive graduate assistant. From 1998, he coached the Yellow Jackets’ running backs for three seasons before serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2001. In 2013, he was interviewed by the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, however, he decided to remain at Penn State.

Eventually, he showed interest in going back to the NFL after Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was fired.
