Bob Huggins grew up in Port Washington, Ohio and played basketball at the Indian Valley South High School, leading his team to a 26-0 record. He transferred from Ohio University to the West Virginia after a year, and played point guard for the Mountaineers from 1975 to 1977. Huggins never made it to the NBA, but following his unsuccessful tryout with the Philadelphia 76ers, he became the temporary assistant coach at West Virginia University.
From 1978 to 1980, Bob served as an assistant at Ohio State, but then got his first head coach job at the Walsh University in 1980. Huggins had great results during his three-year stay at the Walsh, which was a solid recommendation for him to move to the Central Florida as an assistant.
