After matriculating, he went to Lackawanna College, playing football there as an offensive tackle. After finishing junior college, he then got a scholarship at the University of Miami where he would play for the Miami Hurricanes football team. He started his junior and senior years as a left tackle and would perform very well, receiving All-American honors in 2000 and winning the Outland Trophy the following year. He was also named as CNN Sports Illustrated Player of the Year.

McKinnie joined the 2002 NFL Draft and was selected as the seventh overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings. From 2003 to 2007, he started every game for Minnesota, an 80 consecutive game streak. His net worth quickly built up thanks to his performances with the team; in 2009, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl but wasn’t able to play due to an injury. Two years later he had problems with the team, as it was reported that he was out of shape, which eventually led to his release. He then signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2011, but saw limited playing time. He did however play in the 2012-2013 NFL play-offs and helped the team to a Super Bowl win.
