Carl Lewis was born to William and Evelyn Lewis, and was raised with his sister in a family of athletes, as his family ran a local athletics club, thus, from an early age Carl showed an interest in this sport. His first coach was his father, and while he attended Willingboro High School, he started competing in the long jump when he was 13 years old. He excelled and soon after was named fourth on the list of All-Time World Junior long jumpers. After high school career, he entered the University of Houston, where Tom Tellez was his coach. In no time, he set a new school record in long jump with a leap of 8.13m, and so his career really began in 1979.

From the time Carl entered competition, he dominated the field until his retirement. His first notable achievement was in the 1983 World Championships held in Helsinki, winning three gold medals, in 100m, 4x100m relay and also long jump disciplines. The following year, he qualified for the Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles, where he won four gold medals, in 100m, 200m, 4x100m and long jump. He continued his dominance in the World Championship held in Rome in 1987, winning gold medals in 100m, long jump and 4x100m relay disciplines. His career as an athlete was the main source of his net worth during those years, however, he also benefited from numerous sponsorships and commercials.

His next successful sporting event was the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, where he again won gold medals in 100m and long jump, and the silver medal in the 200m, behind Joe DeLoach.

To speak further of his accomplishments, Carl participated in the 1991 World Championships held in Tokyo, where he won gold medals in 4x100m and 100m events, and a silver medal in the long jump. In the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Carl`s dominance began to decline, as he only won gold medals in 4x100m and long jump disciplines. He retired after the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he won gold in the long jump.

During his career, Carl had set several world records, including 9.86s in the 100m, and in the long jump with 8.91 m, also in Tokyo – he won 65 consecutive long jump competitions, one of the longest winning sequences ever in track and field.

Thanks to his successful career, he has received numerous prestigious recognitions, including “Sportsman of the Century” in 1999, by the International Olympic Committee, and also World Athlete of the Century by the International Association of Athletics Federations. Furthermore, Carl was also named Olympian of the Century by the Sports Illustrated.

Apart from his successful career in sports, Carl has also had several TV and film appearances, as himself but also as an actor. He appeared as himself in the TV series “Perfect Strangers”, “Material Girls”, “Man Vs. Beast”, “Daybreak”, and many others which all added to his overall net worth. He has also appeared in other roles in films such as “Atomic Twister” (2002), “The Last Adam” (2006), and “Tournament Of Dreams” (2007).

Carl is also a businessman, since he is the owner of the marketing and branding company C.L.E.G., which also benefits his overall net worth.

Regarding Carl Lewis’ personal life, he is married to Maria, but keeps that part of his life private. In spare time, he is a philanthropist, as he is a member of the celebrity board for Ronald McDonald House Charities, and he is known as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
