Catherine attended Monsignor Edward Pace High School and after matriculating, went to Wheaton College, majoring in English and history while a part of a Theatre course. She did her first theatre production in the college in the play “Uncommon Women and Others”. She graduated in 1983.

Keener’s first roles were in the television series “Ohara” which aired from 1987 to 1988, having made her film debut in “About Last Night…” the previous year. She struggled with finding work but eventually started to hit her stride after “Survival Quest” in 1989. She made a guest appearance in an episode of “Seinfeld” and then starred in “Johnny Suede” alongside Brad Pitt who was relatively unknown at the time – her net worth would start to increase significantly and she got her first Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance in the film. She was then cast in “Living in Oblivion” before having another Independent Spirit Award nomination for her part in “Walking and Talking”.

In 2000, Catherine got her first Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actress in “Being John Malkovich”. She continued to work for Holofcener in “Lovely and Amazing” gaining her third Independent Spirit Award nomination. More opportunities opened up for her, and she then co-starred with Edward Norton in “Burn This”, and had the part of “Simone” alongside Al Pacino. In 2005, she starred with Daniel Day-Lewis in “The Ballad of Jack and Rose” before playing Steve Carell’s love interest in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”. In the same year, she earned numerous awards for her role in “Capote”, including a second Oscar nomination. Her net worth continued to build thanks to these successes.

In 2007, Keener became a part of “Into the Wild”, a critically acclaimed adaption of the book of the same name. The following year, she was then cast in the television movie “An American Crime” which got her an Emmy Award nomination, and in 2012 she appeared in “A Late Quartet” before playing as Percy Jackson’s mother in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”. In 2015, she starred in the miniseries “Show Me a Hero” which is also based on a book. A few of her latest projects include the independent film “Unless”, and the podcast series “Homecoming”, still adding to her net worth.

For her personal life, it is known that Catherine married actor Dermot Mulroney in 1990 and they have a son, but divorced in 2007.

Quotes

#Quote
1Well, the day I got nominated, I had jury duty, a D.U.I. case. The morning the nominations were announced, I reported to jury duty as scheduled. That was good; it gave me perspective. If you start feeling too important, it's always good to go sit in a jury for a D.U.I. charge.
2Luck favors the prepared.
3Well, for one thing, I like being a supporting actress. I like to come and go in the film. The interesting characters are very few if you want to be the lead, and they depend on you being beautiful. Since I'm not interested in those parts, the pressure's off, in a way. I'm not cast for my physicality. I find that playing so many characters in so many films is a way to be in the moment.
4[on her harshest rejection]: "One director said I just wasn't sexy. It was hard, really hard. I left town for two months with my tail between my legs. But you have to kind of go, okay, maybe I'm not their idea of [sexy], but hell, I can have sex!"
