Kelly attended Manchester Central High School in New Hampshire where he was active in football, ice hokey and basketball. He later enrolled in the University of New Hampshire in Durham, and played in the position of quarterback and safety for the college football team under the coach Bill Bowes. Kelly started his first coaching job at Columbia University in 1990 as an assistant coach, first being defensive backs coach and then offensive line coach. The following year he became outside linebackers and safeties coach at the University of Oregon. 1992 saw him as the running backs coach at the University of New Hampshire, for the UNH Wildcats team under his old coach Bowes. During one season in 1993 Kelly was a defensive coordinator at the Johns Hopkins University and then returned to his previous position as the running backs coach at the University of New Hampshire. After three seasons he became the offensive line coach, and then in 1999 the offensive coordinator of the Wildcats, remaining at the position until 2006, building up his net worth.

In 2007 Kelly started to coach at the University of Oregon again, now as an offensive coordinator. During his first season with the Oregon Ducks, the team became the highest scorers, collecting the biggest number of yards in Oregon football history. In 2009 Kelly became the team’s head coach and led the team to four BCS game appearances – the Rose Bowl in 2010, the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, the 2012 Rose Bowl and the 2013 Fiesta Bowl, as well as to three Pac-12 Conference championships from 2009 to 2011 and a conference division title in 2012. Under Kelly, the team achieved undefeated records against the Oregon State Beavers and the Washington Huskies, something that no other Oregon coach had achieved before. He gained a number of prestigious awards during his time at Oregon, which helped considerably to lift his wealth.

In 2013, due to Oregon’s several NCAA violations made during Kelly’s tenure, the team was hit with three years probation and cutbacks in scholarships, while Kelly got an 18-month show-cause penalty.

The same year, he joined the NFL by becoming the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. During his first two seasons with the team, the Eagles won 10 games in each season, including an NFC East Division championship which made Kelly the second coach in the history of the league who won a division title during his first season in the NFL. He significantly increased his fortune while with the Eagles, however, after a 6-9 record in the third season, Kelly was fired by the team.

As of early 2016, he has been hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Kelly has won a number of prestigious awards during his coaching career, including the 2009 and 2010 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, 2010 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, 2010 Walter Camp Coach of the Year, 2010 Sporting News Coach of the Year, 2010 AFCA Coach of the Year, 2010 Associated Press Coach of the Year and 2013 Macwell Club Coach of the Year awards. In 2015 he was even named the third most influential person in the NFL.

When it comes to his personal life, Kelly was married to Jennifer Jenkins during the 90s; the couple divorced after seven years of marriage. In 2008 he was engaged to Karen Biagini but they separated the following year.

Kelly made headlines in 2009 when he responded to a fan’s requesting a refund for his expenses made for watching a game in which the Oregon Ducks lost to Boise State. Kelly sent a personal check to the fan, who later sent a thank-you note to the coach, deciding not to cash the check.
