Murray grew up in Grenada, being raised by his grandparents. When he was seven he went to Trinidad to live with his mother in Port of Spain, struggling with finances. His father was not present in his life, as he, being a physician, was focused on his mission of offering medical services to the poor. Murray only met him in the USA when he was 25. Living in Trinidad, he finished his high school and worked as a volunteer elementary school teacher, customs clerk and insurance underwriter, saving money to attend college.

In 1980 he moved to the USA and enrolled in Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. After graduating magna cum laude with a degree in pre-med and biological sciences, he went on to attend Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, following his father’s footsteps. Searching for additional training, he enrolled in the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, completing his residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. He then attended the University of Arizona on a Cardiology Fellowship.

Returning to California, Murray began working as the associate director for the interventional cardiology fellowship-training program at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. His net worth started to grow, so that in 1999 he opened a private practice in Las Vegas, subsequently boosting his net worth, and founding the Acres Homes Heart and Vascular Institute in Houston in 2006.

The same year Murray met the legendary Michael Jackson, treating one of his children, who later hired him to be his personal physician prior to his 2009 tour. Murray went on to work for the star, receiving a lucrative salary of $150,000 a month, considerably boosting his wealth. However, several weeks later, Jackson was found dead.

According to reports, the singer developed a heavy reliance on prescription drugs, because of his insomnia. Over the course of the six weeks he worked for him, Murray administered him the drug intravenously despite being aware of its potentially fatal consequences. On the night of 25 June 2009, the doctor administered Jackson propofol, in addition to an anti-anxiety drug and a muscle relaxant. He reportedly left the room for several minutes, and on returning found the singer dead. After failed CPR, he administered him flumazenil, to try to offset the previous drugs. When this too didn’t help, the paramedics were called and Jackson was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was officially pronounced dead.

After an extensive and controversial investigation, it was officially confirmed that Jackson had died of a lethal dose of propofol, and Murray was charged with manslaughter. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in 2011, receiving a four-year sentence. He was released two years later.

In his personal life, Murray has reportedly been married twice. Aside from the children from these marriages, he has also fathered several other children; according to sources, he has seven children with six women. So aside from the Jackson case, Murray has also been involved in other controversies. Reportedly, he was in arrears with the mortgage for his Las Vegas home, and allegedly collected a significant debt from unpaid rent for his practices and medical equipment. He has also owed child support, being involved in various civil lawsuits.
