When Cung was three years old, he and his mother fled Vietnam via helicopter under gunfire, while his father was caught and made prisoner. The two spent several months as refugees in a Philippines camp, before they settled in San Jose, California. Unfortunately, Cung’s troubles continued; he was bullied and discriminated against at school, but he found solace in martial arts. Also, he was enrolled in Tae Kwon Do classes by his mother once he turned ten years.
As he got older, Cung turned to wrestling, and in his junior year of high school received All-American honors. After matriculation, he enrolled at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, where he continued to wrestle and won the California Junior College State Championship in the 158 lb weight class in 1990, while also receiving junior college All-American honors. When he was 19 years old, Cung Le started taking lessons in Sanshou kickboxing, and in his subsequent professional kickboxing career, compiled a record of 17 wins without a defeat.
