To begin with, the boy was raised in Santa Rosa, north of San Francisco. He played drums in the local school band. From 1956 he performed in dance clubs, and during high school, he participated in the radio program “Time Out for Teens”, which took place every day for fifteen minutes. In the late 1950s, he enrolled at San Francisco State College, and started playing the guitar and became part of the folk scene of San Francisco, performing in local cafes. Concerning his professional career, Hicks joined the Charlatans, the band based in San Francisco in 1965. In 1969, the band released the studio album “Original Recordings” produced by Bob Johnston; in the album stood out the singles “Canned Music”, “I Scare Myself” and “It’s Bad Grammar, Baby”. In 2000 Hicks used the name Hot Licks again, and made the album “Beatin ‘The Heat” (2000). As the comeback was welcomed by critics and audience, the band continued their work and released a number of albums, among others “Selected Shorts” (2004) and “Crazy for Christmas” (2010). In 2013, he released the album “Live at Davies”, and finally in 2017, the album “Greatest Licks – I Feel Like Singin’” (2017) was released to honour the singer.
Finally, in the personal life of the singer, he was married to Clare Wasserman from 1997 until his death; they had one child. In 2014, he was diagnosed with liver cancer, then in 2015, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and died in 2016 at his home in Mill Valley, California.
