Strauss-Kahn’s family moved from Morocco to Monaco after the 1960 earthquake, and he would attend Lycee Albert 1er. They eventually moved to Paris where he then attended the Lycee Carnot, and he later graduated from HEC Paris, the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and the Paris Institute of Statistics. He earned a degree in public law and later a PhD in aggregation at the Universite Paris X (Nanterre) in 1977. In the same year, he started lecturing at the University of Nancy-II where he would eventually become assistant professor. He then took a position at University of Nanterre, and has taught on and off since then, mainly going to teaching when he had no political responsibilities.

Later, Dominique would become involved in the Socialist Party, and would be appointed as part of the Planning Commission. In 1986, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the first time. Two years later, he was elected in the Val-d’Oise department before becoming the chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Finances. In 1991, he was nominated to become Junior Minister for Industry and Foreign Trade, and stayed in the position for two years until he was appointed to become chairman of the Group of Experts of the Socialist Party. In 1995, he would be elected as mayor of Sarcelles.

In 1997, he was appointed to be Minister for Economics, Finance and Industry. He implemented a wide privatization program, and the economy would benefit from his performance in the office. During his time there, he was discovered to be in an affair with subordinate Piroska Nagy, and the issue led to Nagy being rendered redundant.
