Prior to that, he became a member of the Toronto Police Services as part of the Chief’s Advisory Council. In 2007, Meredith was nominated by the Conservative Party of Canada as its candidate in a Toronto constituency, and won nomination after Mark Warner was removed as standard bearer. He also spoke out against pre-marital sex, and supported increasing the age of sexual consent from 14 to 18. He placed fourth in the re-election, but in 2010, he was appointed to the Canadian Senate. He created numerous issues during his time with the Senate. In 2012, he was criticized for attending an Iranian embassy event at Carleton University after the government urged a boycott of Iran. Two years later, he attended the National Prayer Breakfast and expensed first class costs for himself and his wife to the Senate., and was later forced to pay the expenses. In 2015, an investigation by the Senate started and aimed to look into bullying and sexual harassment of former members of Meredith’s staff. The report was submitted and he was expelled from the Conservative caucus after allegations were made that he had a two year affair with a teenager who was 16 years old at the start of the relationship. He was found guilty of ethics violations in 2017 and was expelled from the Independent Senators Group. It was recommended that he should be expelled from the Senate though he announced his resignation before it could occur.
Prior to all these issues, Don received several awards during his career. He received an Urban Leadership Award from the Canadian Urban Institute, the Toronto Police Service 13 Division Community Service Award, and the Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award.
