Richard’s parents Annie Mae Ross and Sonny Ross raised him in Los Angeles, where he attended Susan Miller Dorsey High School. Despite attending school and playing tennis, Ross was illiterate and wasn’t able to get a college sport scholarship, but attended Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, meantime trying cocaine for the first time when he was a teenager, and then selling it after spending some time with a teacher who was a drug dealer.
Ross then made a connection with Oscar Danilo Blandón and Norwin Meneses Cantarero, Nicaraguan refugees, and that helped him to purchase cheaper cocaine, in particular selling cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs, mostly Bloods and Crips, though immediately investing his money so that his mother wouldn‘t know about his business.
Since Ross’s business was very successful, he decided to expand it; he hired more people and built up his empire. He was subsequently selling drugs not only in Los Angeles, but also in Texas, New Orleans, Oklahoma, Indiana, North and South Caroline, Seattle, Baltimore among other places. Ross was set up by drug lord Oscar Danilo Blandón during the Iran-Contra affair, since Blandón was apparently linked with the CIA at that time. Rick was charged for conspiracy to illegally traffic cocaine, and he was sentenced to life. He was incarcerated in 1996 but his sentence was reduced to 20 years and Ross was actually released in 2009.
Richard Ross has released an autobiographical book “Freeway Rick Ross: The Untold Autobiography”, in 2014 co-working with journalist Cathy Scott. Ross‘s life story is widely used as an inspiration for various films, and he was the main personality in the documentary “American Drug War: The Last White Hope“ as well as in BET’s documentary series called “American Gangster” . He had a role in the documentary “ Freeway: Crack in the System“ as well. He was portrayed in the movie “Kill the Messenger“; more, Rick has become a regular guest on The Joe Rogan show.
There‘s not much known about Richard‘s personal life, but he apparently has a son Bricen who was born in 2011 and a daughter Jordan who was born in 2013. His nickname is related to the properties near the Los Angeles Harbor Freeway which he owned. More, Ross was involved in the scandal with a rapper Rick Ross, when Rapper was sued in 2011 for using Ross’s name. The drug king was expecting $10 million as a compensation but instead the court decided to let rapper keep the name.
