Raised in southern California, Gary attended Ramona High School in Riverside, then enrolled at the University of California, Riverside, and playing golf was a two-time Division II All-American for the UC Riverside Highlanders. In 1970, he won the NCAA Division II individual championship, and then started his professional career a year later. In the following years, McCord participated in 400 PGA Tour events, but although he never won, his two best finishes were at the Greater Milwaukee Open where he took the second place in 1975 and then again in 1977.
