Harold Ford Jr. was the eldest son of Dorothy Bowles and Harold Ford Sr., a former Representative himself, and grew up in Tennessee with his younger brothers, Jake and Isaac. He went to the Double Tree Elementary School, and then to the St. Albans School for Boys in Washington D.C. In 1992 Ford graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American history.

Soon after, Harold began working as a staff aide to the Senate Budget Committee, and the following year he went on to become a special assistant at the United States Department of Commerce. However, he returned to college to study law at the University of Michigan Law School, and earned his J.D. in 1996. Ford entered the race for the term in Congress after his father decided not to run again, and easily won the Democratic primary, subsequently becoming one of the youngest members of Congress in US history at the age of 26. Harold was re-elected for the next four terms, staying in the position until 2007 when he lost the election to the Republican candidate Bob Corke.

Only days after leaving the post, Ford became the chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council in January 2007, while the following March he joined Merrill Lynch, the financial services firm, to be their new vice-chairman and senior policy adviser.
