Hopsin was taught in a special education class at James Monroe High School. The boy loved skateboarding, but later became hooked on rapping. In 2004, he dropped out of school with a view to pursuing a career as a musician. He sang and recorded songs on his own, but failed to find a record label which would sign him to a contract. He had a prepared studio album entitled “Emurge,” but it was left unreleased.

Hopsin’s real solo career began only in 2009, when he signed a contract with Ruthless Records. Up to date he has released 12 singles, three studio albums, two collaborative albums, a mixtape and EPs – his opposition to drugs and alcohol is clearly heard in his songs. His first studio album “Gazing at the Moonlight” (2009) failed to appear on the music charts, although the second album managed to reach 46th place on the Heatseeker Albums chart in the US. Still, the third studio album has been the best of all as it topped the above mentioned chart, and reached 7th position on the Rap chart and 13th on the R&B chart in US. Currently, the artist is working on his fourth album entitled “Pound Syndrome” which is going to be released soon. The following singles have appeared on the R&B and Rap music charts: “Ill Mind of Hopsin 5” (2012), “Hop Is Back” (2013) and “Ill Mind of Hopsin 7” (2014). As a featured artist, he has also collaborated with Tech N9ne and Travis Barker, and has further increased his wealth and popularity appearing on stage as a guest artist with Young Noble, Lowkey, Fury, Ron Jeremy, Lental, Insane Clown Posse, Tech N9ne, DJ Hoppa, SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton and many other entertainers.

In addition to singing, Hopsin debuted on the big screen in 2001, having a small role in the feature film “Max Keeble’s Big Move” directed by Tim Hill. He continued his career, and eventually had a supporting role in the musical drama “Fame” (2009), directed by Kevin Tancharoen. This was followed by two starring roles in the films “Bomb the World” (2010), and “Independent Living: The Funk Volume Documentary” (2013).

Hopsin appeared in an episode of the television series “That’s So Raven” (2002) too, created by Michael Poryes and Susan Sherman, and as the game character, Hopsin also appeared in the video game “Battle Rap Stars” (2011). All those engagements have also added sums to his wealth.

Most recently, in 2016, Hopsin left  Funk Volume declaring it “officially dead”, citing business and financial disputes with co-founder Damien Ritter.  Hopsin then  founded Undercover Prodigy, his own independent record label company, and released “Ill Mind of Hopsin 8“, perhaps unsurprisingly a diss song to Damien Ritter. In early 2017, Hopsin released the single entitled “All Your Fault”, then in September the singles “The Purge” and “Happy Ending”, also announcing a distribution deal with 300 Entertainment. He then released the single “Witch Doctor”,  and finally his fifth studio album “No Shame” in November 2017.

In his personal life, currently Hopsin is in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend Alyce. They still reside in Los Angeles.
