Although born in Fort Worth, Hunter grew up in Arlington, Texas where he went to Arlington High School, where he was a part of the baseball team playing as an outfielder for three years, before the coach changed his positioning to shortstop. Anyways, after matriculation he enrolled at Texarkana College, where he spent a year playing as a designated hitter, but then transferred to the University of Texas at Arlington. He was brought back to his natural position, and also had a .347 batting average in his sophomore year, which earned him first-team all-conference outfielder honors. The following year, he suffered an injury that kept him sidelined for 15 games, however, he still won the 2004 Southland Conference Player of the Year Award.

In 2002, young Hunter was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 40th round of that year’s MLB Draft, but opted out of his contract. Two years later, he was drafted by the Houston Astros as the 64th pick overall, and signed a contract with the Major League franchise, being sent to the A Tri-City ValleyCats, with which he spent 2004 and 2005 seasons. After the ValleyCats, he played a season for the AA Corpus Christi Hooks, and started the 2007 season with the AAA Round Rock Express, before he was brought into the Major League.

In his rookie season, Hunter proved that he could be a worthy asset as he played in 108 games and had 17 home runs, including one grand slam, while he also had 11 stolen bases with a batting average of .322. He was close to winning Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award, and Baseball America Rookie of the Year Award, but lost both times to Ryan Braun. Hunter continued to improve, and in 2009 earned his first All-Star selection.

Hunter stayed with the Astros until 2011 when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for several minor league players. Hunter played quite well for the Phillies, and led the team to the play-offs, however, they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 National League Division Series. The Cardinals went on to win the World Series.

The following year, Hunter was traded to the Giants just before the trade deadline, and in the first season with his new team, Hunter helped the franchise win the World Series against the Detroit Tigers without losing a single game in the finals. In 2012, Hunter signed a new contract with the Giants, worth $90 million over five years, which increased his net worth to a large degree. The Giants repeated their success in 2014, but this time the victory didn’t come easy, since the Giants barely edged out the Kansas City Royals 4-3 in the series.

He missed out on much of the 2015 season due to a fractured left forearm, and a left oblique strain, playing in only 52 games. In recent years, injuries persisted and he has played in barely 200 games over two seasons, without a major contribution.

Regarding his personal life, Hunter has been married to Alexis Cozmobolidis since 2016. Back in 2013, Hunter was diagnosed with a Scheuermann’s disease, which is a spinal disorder, and causes uneven growth of the vertebrae.

Hunter is also known for his charitable activities; he is a part of the Big League Impact, an eight-city fantasy football network, started by the professional baseball pitcher Adam Wainwright. In 2015 alone, the organization raised over $1 million that was passed on to several charity organizations.
