James grew up in New Rochelle, and attended Fieldston School in Riverdale, New York. After matriculation, he enrolled at the University of California, then Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, followed by Sarah Lawrence College in New York.

His interest in films started when he was only eight years old, and from then his ambitions grew with his age. He made his debut in the ‘70s with the horror “Suicide Cult”, after which he scored the horror “The Astrologer” (1975). Five years later he struck the film scene with the action film “The Exterminator”, starring Robert Ginty, Christopher George and Samantha Eggar.
