Janet was educated at South River High School, and after matriculating attended Dougless College of Rutgers University, studying art. She began writing novels in her 30s, and took lessons in improv acting to learn how to write dialogue. She tried to write the Great American Novel but failed with her manuscripts unable to sell. She then tried her hand at writing romantic novels, and this led her to start increasing her net worth.

In 1987, Evanovich writing as Steffie Hall published “Hero At Large”,then the following year started writing under her own name, still continuing to write category romances. She created a lot of likable characters, and the humor in her work also started to get the attention of many. After writing around 12 books, she realized that she was interested in writing action scenes rather than sex scenes, but editors didn’t like the direction she wanted to go, so she took a break to think about what writing she wanted to do.

This led her to shift to romantic adventure novels, and this was the beginning of the Stephanie Plum series. Her books would be told in the first person narrative, with a central character and a supporting cast of characters revolving around that character. After watching the film “Midnight Run”, she decided that her heroine would be a bounty hunter, which would allow more freedom for the character. In 1994, she released “One for the Money” and it had good reviews. Her character Stephanie Plum was barely competent in her work, which actually made her popular. She continued to write Plum’s adventures, and her sixth book “Hot Six” was the first of her novels to reach the top spot of the New York Times Best Seller List. Her net worth started increasing significantly, and since then all of her Plum novels have reached the top spot. She also sold rights for a movie for “One for the Money”, which was released in 2012 and starred Katherine Heigl. Her latest Plum novel is set to release in late 2017

Aside from the Stephanie Plum books, Janet has also written other book series. She has a spin-off of the Plum Books called the Wicked series which is based on baker Lizzie Tucker and Diesel; the characters would find seven stones of power representing the deadly sins. She has also released the Fox and O’Hare series co-written with Lee Goldberg, having grown to five novels, two novellas, and an online short story. She also has other novels most of which are collaborative works.

For her personal life, it is known that Evanovich married Pete in 1964, and they have two children. She frequently travels on book tours and writes for most of the day.
