Jarrett started his interest in athletic activities with basketball while he was in high school. During this time his father was the owner of the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA), and soon Jarrett would find work as a referee and then as a wrestler. He is from a family of wrestlers with both his father Jerry Jarrett and his grandfather Eddie Marlin involved in the industry. As part of the CWA and later the United States Wrestling Association (USWA), Jarrett won the Heavyweight Championship 10 times and the World Tag Team Championship 15 times. He also travelled to Japan and Puerto Rico to wrestle.

In 1993, he became a part of the World Wrestling Federation as Double J, and acted with the gimmick of a country music singer. His first pay-per-view with the company was in the 1994 Royal Rumble and eventually he would start winning matches. He had feuds with wrestlers such as Scott Hall, Shawn Michaels but eventually left the company due to contract disputes. After WWF, he signed with WCW for a one year contract, and became the United States Heavyweight Champion after defeating Dean Malenko. He then went back to the WWF after his contract expired. During his return to the WWF he reprised his country singer gimmick, carrying and using a guitar to occasionally hit other competitors with it. He also had notable feuds with D-X and even had a tag team run with Owen Hart before his tragic accident. Eventually he left the WWF in 1999 after Vince Russo, the head writer resigned from the company. The two then moved back to the WCW, eventually losing a run towards the Heavyweight Championship against Chris Benoit. He continued wrestling, being involved in numerous feuds, and winning the Heavyweight Championship against Diamond Dallas Page. He also had matches with Ric Flair, Booker T and Sting during his time there.

After WCW was acquired by the WWF, Jarrett lost his job but returned in the wrestling scene in 2001 with World Wrestling All-Stars. He stayed there until 2002, when he and his father created Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA); he wrestled there until around 2007, when he stopped appearing on the show to start and focus more on administrative duties. After a year, he returned, feuding with wrestlers such as Kurt Angle. After a few years, he would leave the company to go to Mexico to wrestle. He returned again in 2011, showcasing the AAA Mega Championship he won in Mexico. He then feuded with Jeff Hardy for a while and then left the company again to oversee a new promotion in India. He would soon officially resign from TNA in 2014, deciding to open a new promotion called Global Force Wrestling or GFW.

For his personal life it is known that Jeffrey married his high school sweetheart in 1992, but she perished because of breast cancer during 2008; they had three daughters during their marriage. Jarrett then linked to Karen Angle, and they married in 2010.
