Joan Sebastian grew up in Guerrero: when he was seven years old, he showed a talent for music. He attended school in his hometown, then as a 14-year-old boy, he went to the monastery in Morelos, because he wanted to become a priest, but soon after he decided to devote to his career to the music industry.

Before he decided to pursue a career in music, Sebastian worked as an administrative assistant at a vacation resort in Oaxtepec, Morelos, meantime struggling to get the attention of the record labels. In 1968, Sebastian met Mexican actress Angelica Maria, and while together, Sebastian showed her his musical talents, after which she advised him to record his songs and to try to get in touch with Eduardo Magallanes, who was a music producer. Sebastian never managed to contact Magallanes, but moved to Mexico City regardless in order to pursue a career in music.

Finally, in 1974 he signed a contract with Discos Capitals Records, and soon released his first album, entitled “Pedro Parrandas”, which became highly praised by critics and the public as well. This encouraged him to continue to produce music, and in 1977 came his second release, entitled “Ya Las Mariposas”, which was released through the Musart record label. Since these first releases, his net worth was constantly growing, and with every successive successful release it increased a little bit more.

Overall, Sebastian eventually released over 40 albums, such as “Viva La Vida” (1991), “Afortunado” (2002), “Un Lojo” (2012), “Inventario” (2005), and his last release before his death “13 Celebrando El 13 (2013)”. Some of his albums were certified gold and platinum, including the 2000 album “Secreto De Amor”. To speak further of his successful career, Sebastian won several awards, such as seven Latin Grammy awards and five Grammy awards, becoming the most awarded musician in Mexican history. However, the hallmark of his career was his induction into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

During his active career, Joan also collaborated with other notable artists of the Mexican music scene, such as Lucero, Pepe Aguilar, Vicente Fernandez, and many others, mostly as a songwriter, as it has been reported that Sebastian wrote over 1000 songs, which also added considerably to his overall net worth; fr his contributions as a songwriter he received the Golden Note Award in 2007.

Apart from his successful career as a singer, Joan was also recognized as an actor, making his debut appearance in the soap opera “Tú y Yo” (1996) – this also added to his net worth.

Unfortunately, in 1999 Joan Sebastian was diagnosed with a bone cancer. His treatment was initially successful, but it returned in 2007, and he passed away on the 13th July 2015 in his hometown. Sebastian was 64 years old.
