John Samuel Waters, Jr. is a son of John Samuel Waters, a manufacturer of fire protection equipment, and Patricia Ann. He went to the private Calvert School in Baltimore, and then attended Towson Jr. High School and Calvert Hall College High School, before Waters matriculated from the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland.
Waters got an 8mm camera as a present for his 16th birthday and made his unofficial debut with the short film “Hag in a Black Leather Jacket” in 1964. His first feature film was “Eat Your Makeup” (1968), followed soon after by “Mondo Trasho” (1969), “Multiple Maniacs” (1970), “Pink Flamingos” (1972), “Female Trouble” (1974), and “Desperate Living” (1977). All his early films were shot in Baltimore, and Waters used local actors and friends to perform in them. a group called “The Dreamlanders”. They were trash and controversy movies, but Waters still earned a nice amount of money thanks to them. He began leaning toward the mainstream in the early ’80’s.
In 1981, Waters directed “Polyester”, starring Divine and Tab Hunter, but “Hairspray” (1988), with Sonny Bono, Ruth Brown and Divine was different from his early work, as he chose to minimize the thrash and unpleasant scenes. Everything changed when Divine died soon afterwards, and without his muse, Waters changed his style for good. He filmed “Cry Baby” (1990) starring Johnny Depp, “Serial Mom” (1994) with Kathleen Turner, “Pecker” (1998) with Edward Furlong and Christina Ricci, and “Cecil B. DeMented” (2000) starring Melanie Griffith and Stephen Dorff. Waters’ most recent movie is “Kiddie Flamingos” in 2015.
As an actor, Waters had his debut in Jonathan Demme’s comedy “Something Wild” (1986). He made notable appearances in his “Hairspray” (1988), Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999), Richard Bates Jr. horror “Excision” (2012), and “Suburban Gothic” (2014), from the same director. Waters’ latest movie is the Christmas animated horror movie “Mugworth”, currently in post-production.
