Karyn was the eldest of five children in the family. As a child she sang in a church choir and later as a backing singer. In 1986, she sang on Jeff Lorber’s singles “Facts of Love”, “Back in Love” and “True Confessions”, but eventually signed for Warner Bros Records, and released her debut self-titled album in 1988, which contained hit singles such as “The Way You Love Me”, “Superwoman”, “Secret Rendezvous”, “Love Saw It”, and achieved platinum. At the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards, she was nominated in the Best R&B/Urban Contemporary New Artist category, and also for two Grammy Awards.
