Ken Schrader started racing in 1971 and was a champion at Lake Hill Speedway in Valley Park, before moving up to sprint cars. In 1980, Ken was the rookie of the year in USAC’s Stock Car Division, and a year later finished third overall. He had a quite decent career in USAC series; winning four sprint car races, then 21 in midgets, six Silver Crown races, and 24 other midget races in various divisions.
In 1984, Schrader debuted in the NASCAR Cup Series, finishing 19th at Nashville, while in 1986 season, he had four top ten finishes, ending at 16th in the standings. Ken secured his first career pole in 1987 at the TranSouth 500, but ended 5th, which was his best finish at the time. In 1988, Ken’s first victory came at the Talladega DieHard 500, and soon after he was victorious at the Ames/Peak 200, then recorded his third win at the Motorcraft Quality Parts 500. In 1994, he finished the season in the fourth place, but after a nine-year association with Hendrick Motorsports, Schrader left to join Andy Petree Racing in 1997. He made several pole positions in the next few years; in 2001, he was involved in an accident in which Dale Earnhardt crashed into the wall and died.
In 2003, Ken joined BAM Racing, but he hasn’t recorded any notable results since then, and has changed teams several times, including to Wood Brothers Racing and Bobby Hamilton Racing, but returned to BAM Racing in 2008 and competed for them until 2013. He then signed a deal with FAS Lane Racing, and ran in the truck series too, and even became the oldest pole setter in any NASCAR series at aged 58. In May 2013, Schrader became the oldest ever ARCA race winner, and then announced his retirement after the season, but returned to drive for Federated Auto Parts and finished fourth at 2014 Truck race at Eldora. Most recently, Ken competed at the Mudsummer Classic in 2015 and 2016 editions of the Mudsummer Classic; Schrader ended in the 12th place.
