Millwood attended Bessemer City High School in North Carolina, and skipped college so was selected in the 11th round of the MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves in 1993. However, he played in minor leagues for the next four years, before making his MLB debut in July 1997, and was part of the pitching rotation alongside with Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. In his first MLB season, Millwood played in just eight games. In 1998, he won 17 matches and had 18 season home runs. The 1999 season was one of Millwood’s most successful seasons; he played in 33 games and started all of them. In addition to that, his team scored 18 victories. He pitched 228.0 innings and achieved 80 runs, and was selected for his only All-Star game. In addition to that, Millwood led the team into the victory in the 2001 National League Championship Series.

However, Kevin ended up being traded into the Philadelphia Phillies before the beginning of 2003 season, to manage the salary cap, and in 2003 won 14 games while pitching 222.0 innings. He spent another season in the Phillies only to be traded into the Cleveland Indians, signing a one year contract with the team. As the result of his poor run support, Kevin’s score was 9-11, so at season’s end he signed a five year deal worth $60 million with the Texas Rangers. However, his performance wasn’t up to scratch during this period. In 2007 season, Millwood scored .417 with 172.2 innings pitched, and so in 2009 he was traded into to the Baltimore Orioles for Chris Ray and Ben Snyder.

During the season of 2010, his skills on the field weren’t successful, and he ended up with a 4-16 record and 5.10 run average. In the following year, Kevin joined the New York Yankees, but having made just three starts in the minor league, he left the team, and on 19 May 2011 Millwood signed a contract with Boston Red Sox, but was released in August of the same year. He went on to join the Colorado Rockies as a replacement for their injured player, Juan Nicasio, and pitched 4-3 with 54.1 innings. In January 2012, he announced that he had joined the Seattle Mariners, initially signing a minor league contract, but was eventually called up to make his first major league start of the season in a match against the Chicago White Sox. On May 13 in the same year, Kevin scored his 2,000th career strikeout in a game against the New York Yankees. In June 2011, he pitched the first six innings prior to getting injured, and was put on the disabled list. In 2013, Millwood announced his retirement after 16 years spent on the baseball diamond.

In his private life, Kevin was married to Rena Stevens from 1999 until divorcing in 2008; they have two sons together. In his hometown, a street was named after him.
