Leonard grew up in his hometown and went to Asheville High School, where he started playing football. In the beginning, he held linebacker and wide receiver positions and earned several recognitions, including a Super Prep, Blue Chip, Prep Football Report as well as a First-team All-American. Years after matriculation, Asheville High School retired his jersey number.

After high school, Leonard enrolled at the University of Tennessee, where he continued to play football, and during his senior season had the most tackles on his team, with 87, while also recording 8.5 sacks. The same season he was named first-team All-America, and first-team All-Southeastern Conference. He finished his education with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, after which he declared for the 1998 NFL Draft. Leonard was selected as the 65th overall pick by the St. Louis Rams; the Rams traded for him, as they feared that the Pittsburgh Steelers would select him before them.

Leonard signed his first professional contract on the 2nd July 1998 worth $1.2 million over three years, which also included a $400,000 signing bonus, which certainly further contributed to his wealth. In his first season, Leonard played in six games only due to his problems with the legal system, as he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. He was the linebacker in his rookie season and made only two tackles. The second season wasn’t much better for Leonard, since he was suspended for half of the season following legal proceedings, but he didn’t bow down and in 2000 came back stronger and better which was confirmed through his playing performance. Leonard wore the Rams jersey 14 times in 2000 season, and made 17 tackles with 5.0 sacks. Season after season, his numbers improved so in 2001 he had 33 tackles, and 14.5 sacks, his career high in sacks, then in 2002 he made 44 tackles with 12.0 sacks. Thanks to his improving performance, Leonard received a contract extension in 2002, worth $17.5 million, further increasing his wealth. For the 2003 season, Leonard was chosen for the Pro-Bowl game, while also made it into All-Pro. He continued to dominate the field, and in 2006 had one of his best seasons with 60 tackles and 13.0 sacks. In his last two seasons in the NFL Leonard struggled with injuries, and the Rams chose not to re-sign him at the end of 2009 season when his contract had expired. He became an unrestricted free agent and was about to talk with the New Orleans Saints of a contract with the franchise, however, Leonard canceled the meeting. He officially retired on the 15th December 2010.

Regarding his personal life, Leonard has had severe problems with drunk driving; in 1998 he killed a woman named Susan Gutweiler and got four years probation along with 1,000 hours of community service. Then in 2004 he was caught again driving under the influence, thankfully this time he didn’t hurt anyone, and he received two years probation, which started on the 6th May 2005.

When it comes to his most intimate details such as marital status and number of children, information like that remains hidden from the public eyes, as he tends not to share personal information.
