Petty’s first on-screen appearance came in an episode of “The Equalizer” in 1985, and then she played in an episode of “The Twilight Zone” in 1986. Lori ended the ‘80s with roles in several TV movies and the TV series “Booker” (1989-1990) starring Richard Grieco. She became popular in the early ‘90s with parts in such movies as “Cadillac Man” (1990) alongside Robin Williams, Tim Robbins, and Pamela Reed, and in Kathryn Bigelow’s “Point Break” (1991) with Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. With Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, Petty co-starred in Penny Marshall’s Golden Globe-nominated comedy “A League of Their Own” in 1992. In 1993, she starred in “Free Willy”, and thanks to the commercial success of the movie with over $150 million earned, Petty’s net worth increased significantly.

In the mid-90s, Lori played in “The Glass Shield” (1994) alongside Michael Boatman and Ice Cube, and starred in “Tank Girl” (1995) with Ice-T and Naomi Watts. She ended the decade with roles in the comedy “Relax… It’s Just Sex” (1998) and in seven episodes of “Brimstone” (1998-1999). 1[on the effect The Poker House rape scene had on its viewers] I had a girl come up to me, and she's like "I'm a rape survivor." I said, "No you're not. Stop that." She's like, "What?" She's 17 and came up to me after the movie. She said, "I was raped at 14." I said, "That stupid ass man did a fucked up thing. It has nothing to do with you. You are not tarnished, you are not changed, you are fine. He's fucked up. You're fine." Her eyes opened.
