Marcos is the son of Ross, who was also a racer in his time; he grew up in his hometown and went to Scotch Oakburn College.

Marcos, as his father, became interested in racing at a very young age; he entered kart racing when he was ten years old, and in the next four years won Tasmanian state junior karting titles, while in 1995 he won the Australian karting champion in the Clubman Heavy class at the Dubbo circuit in New South Wales. After several years of success, he moved to Formula Ford the following year, racing for the Swift Racing Cars. He finished fourth that season, and then in 1997 started his own team and improved his result as he finished second, driving a Van Diemen RF 97 Ford.

After the 1997 season, Marcos moved to Europe, competing in the British Formula Ford series for the next two years, and won the Formula Ford Euro Cup in 1999. He then tried himself in the French Formula Three Championship, as he wanted a way into Formula 1. Unfortunately, luck turned its back on him, and Marcos finished 12th in the 2000 season. Due to the unsuccessful season, he didn’t have enough funding to continue his European competition, and so returned to Australia.

There, he found success in the V8 Supercar Championship Series; he was a racer for the Stone Brother Racing team from 2001 until 2004 and won two V8 Supercar Championship series, and two times finished as the third best driver on the tour.

Having acquired national popularity, Marcos decided to try himself in NASCAR; he first competed in the Craftsman Truck Series, driving Ford F-150 for the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, and finished 21st, finishing in top ten four times during the season, and also acquired one pole position.

Then he began competing in the Busch Series, which then became Nationwide series, and in 2007 season drove Ford Fusion for the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing and finished 8th in the championship. His first NASCAR win came the following year in the Xfinity Series, at the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen.

He recorded four more victories and had the best finish in the championship in 2007 when he was the 8th best driver.

When it comes to Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, he had only two wins, first at 2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen (Watkins Glen), and the second and also last one at 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen (Watkins Glen), which only increased his wealth. From 2011 he raced for Richard Petty Motorsports, and then retired in 2014, stating that he has had accomplished everything he could in NASCAR.

He returned to Australia and competed again in the V8 Supercars Championship, this time for the DJR Team Penske, but didn’t have much success, as he finished 43rd in the championship. He decided not to extend his contract and officially retired from racing.

Regarding his personal life, Marcos has been married to Sonja since 2007, with whom he has two children.
