Maria first came to attention during her junior career, when she became one of the youngest winners of both the US Open and Canadian junior tournaments; this would lead her to turn pro and participate in WTA events. She started moving up the rankings, but was derailed by injuries. Despite this, she reached the 2005 French Open before being defeated by Serena Williams. She continued to play well over the years, and would to increase her net worth. She won her first title in Beijing, and would enter the World’s Top 20 for the first time in 2006, reaching the third round of the US Open. She then joined the Fed Cup tournament representing Russia.

In 2007, Kirilenko reached the third round of the 2007 Australian Open before being defeated, and the quarterfinals of the Acura Classic but lost against Elena Dementieva. Afterwards, she would participate in the US Open again, before winning her second WTA title at the Sunfeast Open. The following year would mark the first time she reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open, and later in the year she would win another WTA title at Barcelona. In 2009, she then partnered with Agnieszka Radwanska, reaching the finals of the Dubai doubles tournament. She continued with good performances for the rest of the year.

She maintained her ranking all throughout the next year, winning the Gold Group Championship, and reaching the semifinals of the Guangzhou International Women’s Open, participating in many other tournaments during that year.

Maria represented Russia at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and would reach the semifinals before being defeated by eventual silver medalist Maria Sharapova. She was injured for most of the latter part of the year, which limited her playing time, but in 2013 she had a good run, making her mark in several Grand Slam tournaments which would help her ranking reach the 10th spot. She got to the semifinals of the Australian Open and the Monterrey Open, however, a knee injury would then sideline her until 2014. One of her latest tournaments was the 2014 US Open.
