Matt Drudge was raised in Takoma Park, the only child of a former staff attorney (mother) and a former social worker (father), both Reform Jewish democrats who worked for the federal government. His parents split when Matt was six, and he continued living with his mother.

He graduated in 1984 from Northwood High School as one of the worst students in the class. A few years later, he moved to Los Angeles, and started working in the CBS Television gift shop. In 1994, he got his first computer, from his father, and soon started publishing an e-mail newsletter with gossip/opinion information about the entertainment industry that he picked up on his day-job. His career didn’t officially begin until 1995, when Matt launched online the “Drudge Report” – the one-man news bureau, from his home. By the year 1997, his website had over 85,000 subscribers and transitioned from entertainment to political gossip, hitting the global network. That’s when his publicity started rising as well as his fortune.

In 1998, he was the first one to publicize the story about White House sex scandal – an alleged affair between an intern, Monica Lewinsky, and President Bill Clinton. This breakthrough made him a dominant factor in the political gossip scene. From 1998 to 1999, Matt Drudge hosted “Drudge on the Fox News Channel”, a Saturday night TV show. All these engagements provided a solid basis for his impressive net worth.

After parting ways because of Fox’s censorship, Matt hosted his own Sunday night radio talk show for ABC, also named “The Drudge Report”. Due to his specific “take-no-prisoners” attitude, by the year 2000, he had been fired from both television and radio, however, this didn’t slow him down a bit. In 2001, he published the book, “Drudge Manifesto” and also debuted on the WABC radio station with “The Matt Drudge Show”. His notoriety and popularity of the book and the show has certainly added a significant sum to his overall net worth.

When it comes to his personal life, it seems that, although he is a master in digging through celebrities trash, he is also a master in covering his own tracks. Besides the mentioned assets in his possession that he has publicly acknowledged, and his passion for traveling, there are no other rumors or controversy about his private life.

Out Magazine listed Matt Drudge on the Power List of the “top 50 gay men and women whose power and prestige is instrumental in influencing how we think about, and engage with, the world”, for three years in a row – 2011, 2012 and 2013.
