Michael Clarke Duncan was a famous American voice actor, actor, model, as well as a bodyguard. To the public, Michael Clarke Duncan is perhaps best known for his portrayal of John Coffey in Frank Darabont’s fantasy drama film entitled “The Green Mile”. Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same title, the film received rather positive critical feedback, and gained commercial success by grossing $290 million at the box office worldwide. Aside from Duncan, the main characters were played by Tom Hanks, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt and Doug Hutchison. For his role in the movie, Duncan received a Black Reel Award for Best Supporting Actor, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award, and was nominated for several Academy Awards, Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, and Chicago Film Critics Association Award. Michael Clarke Duncan was born in 1957, in Illinois, United States. Duncan began his studies at the Kankakee Community College, and then enrolled in Alcorn State University. However, in order to financially support his family, he had to give up his studies at the university, and consequently took a variety of jobs including working as a bouncer at clubs, as well as working at the “People’s Gas Company”. He also worked as a security guard, and later became a bodyguard for such famous people as LL Cool J, The Notorious B.I.G, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Around the same time, Duncan was making minor appearances on television screens. Michael Clarke Duncan quit his job as a bodyguard after the death of The Notorious B.I.G, and focused his attentions on the film industry. He made brief appearances in several movies, before he rose to fame with Michael Bay’s “Armageddon”, which subsequently landed him a role in “The Green Mile”. By then, Michael Clarke Duncan was already a well-recognized actor. Aside from his acting on screen, Duncan took up voice acting, and provided voices for characters in “Brother Bear”, “Kung Fu Panda” and “Green Lantern”. Some of his later roles included films like “A Crush on You” with Sean Patrick Flanery and Kim Rhodes, “In the Hive”, as well as “From the Rough” starring Taraji P. Henson, Tom Felton and LeToya Luckett.

1Duncan had appeared in three comic book feature film adaptations, from three different comic book publishers: He played the DC Comics character Kilowog in Green Lantern (2011), the Dark Horse character, Manute in Sin City (2005), and the Marvel Comics character, Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin in Daredevil (2003).
2Following his death, he was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) in Los Angeles, California.

18Duncan did bodyguard work for Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Jamie Foxx, LL Cool J and The Notorious B.I.G.; he let a friend take over for him the night Notorious B.I.G. got shot, which prompted him to quit that line of work.
