Although born in Sao Paulo, Mike was raised in several cities, including Miami, Buenos Aires and Lisbon. Eventually, Krieger moved to California in 2004, to enroll at Stanford University and study Computer Science. It was there that he met other skillful colleagues, and worked on a variety of projects. His Master’s thesis was based on the inter-activity of user interfaces, specifically collaborating on a large scale. Upon graduation, he worked at the instant messaging firm “Meebo”, in Mountain View, where he designed the start-up and developed resources for the site for about a year and a half. Krieger also met Meebo’s founders, and used the opportunity to learn about creating small companies. While then participating in the Mayfield Fellows Program which taught about successful and failed start-ups, he worked on innovative ideas of students and offered internship programs, and met his future colleague, Kevin Systrom. Burbn was a HTML5 web app which allowed users to check in certain locations and therefore earn credits after posting photos. That’s how they started developing the app’s version which focused only on photos, but unfortunately that turned out to be a failure.
Despite their mishap, Mike didn’t lose hope and suggested working on a mobile app which would remove everything except the photos and comment feature, and the result was Instagram – an abbreviation of instant photograph or telegram – and the app’s first version was given to their friends for reviews. Instagram was launched online in October 2010, and has since become one of the most successful social network applications. Already at the beginning of 2011, Instagram had millions of users, and attracted investments from several companies such as Netscape, Facebook and Twitter. By the end of the year, it was elected the best software among the 500 000 iPhone apps, by Apple. Before being purchased by Facebook, the company had already raised $40 million with a staff of just 14 people.
