He then moved to study English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, following which in 1982 he moved to New York, and became involved in stage productions, appearing in many off-Broadway plays for the next seven years, including “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Cabaret”. He then moved back to North Carolina and started to appear in local features, including “Days of Thunder” and “The Prince of Tides”, which is based on the novel of the same name.
