When he was only 13 years old, his grandfather Alexander II was murdered and his father inherited the throne, and Nikolai became heir apparent. Nikolai`s reign began in 1894 and lasted until 1917, and during his reign Russian empire was in constant economic growth, including the Trans-Siberian Railway being constructed, which only increased his popularity within the people of Russia, and which temporarily secured his position as the Tsar. The end of war came in 1905, with the Portsmouth Treaty, after the Japanese had totally devastated Russia`s navy at the Battle of Tsushima. However, on Sunday 9th January, workers marched through the city with religious banners and flags, shouting “God Save The Tsar”. The goal of the group was to enter the Winter Palace and give Nikolai the petition of the workers, but as they came near the palace, the police opened fire on the crowd, and the results were catastrophic. The event was later called Bloody Sunday, as 92 people died, and more than a hundred wounded.

However, the triumph of Bolshevism saw his total demise. His whole his family was executed on the 17th July 1918 in Yekaterinburg, Russia, by Bolsheviks controlled by Vladimir Lenin.

The abrupt end of his life led eventually to his canonization, and in 1981 he was recognized as a martyred saint, alongside his wife and his children, and two decades later in 2000, he was titled as passion-bearer by the synod of the Russian Orthodox Chucrch.
