Although born in Woonsocket, Norm spent his childhood in Milford, Massachusetts, where he went to high school. After high school matriculation, Norm enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, Amhers where he studied mechanical engineering and business administration. While in college he was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity.

Following his college graduation, Norm was hired by a multimillion-dollar New England-based construction firm, as site supervisor, a position he held for the next three years. After those three years passed, he started his own company, called Integrated Structures Inc., so his net worth was well established.

In 1979 his life changed completely; he was hired by television producer Russell Morash to build a small barn in his backyard, and Morash soon deepened their relationship as he contracted Norm to renovate an old Victorian house, which would be filmed for his “This Old House”, series. Soon enough, Norm became a regular in “This Old House” as the master carpenter, and since then has appeared in more than 240 episodes. This became the main source of his net worth through the years.

Also, Morash created a spin-off series called “The New Yankee Workshop”, which began airing in 1989 and lasted until 2009. Norm made 232 appearances as a host, which also increased his net worth.

Thanks to his immense popularity, Norm has featured in several variety shows, including “Late Night with David Letterman”, and “The Rosie O`Donnell Show”, while he also made appearances in TV series “Ask This Old House” (2002), “Inside This Old House” (2003), and “Ace of Cakes” in 2010.

He is also a published author, and apart from the books already mentioned, he also serves on the board of editors of This Old House magazine, while he also writes a column – “Norm`s Notebook” – for popular magazines.

Thanks to his work, Norm receive what would be the first ever EyeSmart Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2009, as an honor for his commitment to safety and prevention of eye injuries.

Regarding his personal life, Norm is married to Elise Hauenstein and the couple has two children. The Abram family resides in Carlisle, Massachusetts, in a home that Norm built; it is a custom modified-classic two-story home.

Norm is an avid fan of cooking and he often likes to visit art galleries and museums, when time permits. He also spends free time fishing, kayaking and boating.
