Peter is a son of Pedro, a Cuban butcher, and Deborah, a Chicago citizen from Africa; his parents struggled in Chicago, and his mother moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan with Peter and his brothers, after his father was sent to prison for money laundering. In order to avoid the streets, Peter signed for boxing training, and little by little fell in love with the sport, so when he turned 18 he moved to New York to try and become a professional.
Upon arriving to New York, Peter signed with boxing promoter and manager Cedric Kushner; his debut fight came in 2006 against Anthony Hunter, which Peter with a first round TKO.
