He continued with amateur wrestling at Lassen Community College in Susanville, California, but was expelled for fighting with a teammate. He then switched to MMA, compiling an 11-1 record in various smaller American promotions. His fortune began to increase.

In 2001 he joined the Japanese MMA federation PRIDE Fighting. After being defeated by Kazushi Sakuraba, Jackson went on to capture a number of wins, gathering a large fan base in PRIDE and establishing a decent net worth. He also competed in two kickboxing matches, winning both of them. With a desire to capture the PRIDE middleweight title, Jackson began a rivalry with Wanderlai Silva, however, it proved fruitless. Meanwhile, he scored several Pride victories, such as over Murilo Bostamante, Chuck Liddell, Ricardo Arona and Yoon Dong-Sik, addeingto his wealth.

In 2006 he signed a long-term deal with the World Fighting Alliance, and went on to defeat Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland. Later that year, WFA was bought out by UFC; after losing a match against Marvin Eastman, Jackson went on to face UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell in 2007, putting him down in just under 90 seconds and taking the UFC Light Heavyweight title. His popularity was boosted and his net worth greatly improved.

With PRIDE being purchased by UFC in 2007, Jackson got his chance to capture the PRIDE middleweight title held by Dan Henderson at the time, defeating Henderson and unifying the PRIDE middleweight and UFC light heavyweight belts, plus significantly improving his wealth. He went on to participate as a coach in the “Ultimate Fighter 7” in 2008, leading his team against that of Forrest Griffin who eventually won, taking Jackson’s UFC Light Heavyweight title. Later that year he faced Wanderlai Silva, winning the fight and avenging his previous defeats by Silva. In 2009 he won against Keith Jardine, earning a shot to fight against Rashad Evans for the Light Heavyweight title, however, he was unable to fight due to injuries – he eventually faced Evans in 2010, but in a losing effort.

Later that year Jackson signed a new six-fight contract with the UFC, and went on to defeat Lyoto Machida and Matt Hamill; his wealth grew larger. He then earned his second title shot, facing Jon Jones in 2011, but again lost, and another loss followed in 2012 against Ryan Bader, and a year later, he was defeated by Glover Teixeira.

In 2014 he returned to the UFC, and went on to win against Fábio Maldonado. In 2016 he switched to Bellator again, defeating Satoshi Ishii, and then losing to Muhammed Lawal in 2017.

Meanwhile in 2013, he briefly returned to his wrestling career, appearing on Total Nonstop Action Wrestling’s program “Impact Wrestling” as a member of New Main Event Mafia stable.

Aside from his career in MMA and wrestling, Jackson has also pursued an acting career, which has been another source of his net worth.
