Talking about his professional career as a coach, he started as an assistant coach for the college team Western Kentucky in 1987. The following year, Ryan took the position of an outside linebackers coach in another college team, that of Ohio State University. Then, he settled down in Nashville, Tennessee, where he spent five seasons from 1989 to 1993, training the college football team The Tennessee State Tigers. At first he held the position of running backs coach (1989 – 1991), then linebackers coach (1992) and finally, he worked as defensive line coach (1993). From 1994 to 1995, Rob worked as defensive backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. Afterwards, as a defensive coordinator he worked training the Oklahoma State University team from 1997 to 1999; the team reached the 10th position in total defence in the U in 1999.

In 2000, Bob Ryan was invited to coach linebackers in the professional NFL team – the New England Patriots, where he stayed until 2003. The defence of the players improved, with the help of Ryan set the franchise record of the best defence in the history of New England Patriots, while winning two Super Bowls. As a defensive coordinator he worked for Oakland Raiders (2004 – 2008), Cleveland Browns (2009 – 2010), Dallas Cowboys (2011 – 2012) and The New Orleans Saints (2013 – 2015), all of the NFL. Since 2016, he has been working as an assistant head coach for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Ryan is considered to be a good coach, although he earns criticism because of his impulsive and over-confident behaviour with mass / media representatives.
