Dwayne attended President William McKinley High School and later Freedom High School, during which time he played football for the school team and was also a member of the wrestling team.
After matriculating, he accepted a full scholarship from the University of Miami, playing as a defensive tackle for The Hurricanes school football team, including for the 1991 national championship team. However, he graduated with a degree in criminology and physiology, following which in 1995 he joined the Canadian Football League, but was cut after two months.
Johnson then transitioned his focus to professional wrestling, as he came from a family which consisted of many professional wrestlers. After training with his father, he then tried out for World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1996, starting wrestling in the independent scene, and making his debut in 1996 as Rocky Maivia.
