Ron Jaworski grew up in Lackawanna, and although he was a three-sport star in high school, he rejected the opportunity to sign a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, and instead enrolled at Youngstown State University. During his college days, Jaworski was an exceptional quarterback and was selected to the Senior Bowl.
The Los Angeles Rams selected him in the second round of the 1973 NFL Draft, but mostly used him as the third quarterback behind John Hadl and James Harris, although with reasonable playing time while they were injured in the 1975 season. However, he lost his starting job to Pat Haden in 1976, and was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1977 in exchange for All-Pro tight end Charlie Young. Jaworski was a starting quarterback in his first season with the Eagles and took them to the playoffs in 1978 and 1979.
In 1980, Jaworski led the Eagles to an 11-1 regular season record, winning the NFC Eastern Division for the first time, but they eventually lost to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV. It was the best season in his career, and he was selected to his only Pro Bowl. Jaworski stayed in Philadelphia the next six years, but without significant results, and in 1987 the Eagles released him with the record of 69 wins, 67 defeats, and a tie.
Jaworski signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins in 1987, increasing further his net worth, but was only a backup to the Hall of Famer quarterback Dan Marino, and didn’t see any playing time that season.
