After graduating, he started his career as a reporter and sports anchor for WTVJ, briefly working there, and then moving to Los Angeles to work for KCBS-TV as a sports anchor, where he stayed from 1977 to 1985. Around this time, he was the host of the ESPN interview program “SportsLook”, which was later renamed to “Up Close”. In 1987, he served as the color commentator during the first season of the “Sunday Night Football” telecasts.

Thanks to Firestone’s work, more opportunities opened up for him, and his net worth increased significantly. He made appearances in “Nightline”, “Larry King Live”, and “The Late Show with David Letterman”. He also became involved with numerous corporate clients such as Toyota, Nike and Chevron. In 1988, he voiced the cartoon character Egghead in the film “Daffy Duck’s Quackbusters”, later making an appearance in the film “Jerry Maguire”. He also starred in an episode of “Married… with Children”, and then appeared in an episode of “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

He’s also been criticized numerous times especially during his interview with OJ Simpson in 1992, as he sided with Simpson during the interview, and expressed his annoyance at press reports portraying Simpson as “the bad guy”. He downplayed the criminal charges and then asserted that both parties were guilty. The criticism held on for a long time, and even made it into the documentary “OJ: Made In America”.
