Sabeer Bhatia Net Worth $200 Million

Sabeer Bhatia was raised in an upper middle class family, by father Baldev Bhatia, who was an officer in the Indian Army and later was the Minister of Defense in the Indian government, and mother Daman Bhatia, who worked at the Central Bank of India. As he grew up in Bangalore, in a working class surroundings, from an early age he was interested in education and working. He was educated at The Bishop’s School, in Pune, and then he became a student at the St. Joseph’s College in his hometown. He attended the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in Pilani, until in 1988 he scored a Transfer Scholarship in the USA, so he moved there, to continue his education at California Institute of Technology. Afterwards, he graduated with a masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Stanford. As he was studying there, he was working on a project called “Ultra Low Power VLSI Design”. His idols were successful persons such as Steve Jobs and Scott McNealy, so he naturally wanted to be like them.

In 1992, Bhatia started earning serious money by working as a hardware engineer for Apple Computers for almost a year, and then was employed in the Firepower Systems Company, Inc., where he spent two progressive years.

While he was working in these two companies he was fascinated by how much one web browser helped people to use the Internet faster and more easily. He realized that he could make any software available through a web browser, and on the 4th July 1996, with his colleague from Apple Company, Jack Smith, founded an e-mail service called “Hotmail” by the capital letters of “HTML”, the standard language used to create the base of web pages. This year has been the most successful year in his engineering career and his overall net worth was raised to a new level. Currently, Hotmail is better known by its new name “Outlook” and is one of the world’s largest e-mail providers with over 370 million registered users, available in 36 languages. In 1997, Bhatia and Smith decided to sell Hotmail to Bill Gates’ Microsoft Corporation, for $400 million, which also added to his net worth.

After Hotmail was taken over by Microsoft, Sabheer stayed there for one year, and then left to start a new site. He had an idea to create a the world’s largest human network of intellectual capital, so called “Arzoo.com”, but it failed and he relaunched it as a travel website. His net worth was certainly rising. Later, in 2007, Bhatia started another online office program, Live Documents, which was very similar to Microsoft Office. In 2008, Bhatia worked SbSeBolo.com, a free web based teleconferencing system.

Aside from IT, Sabheer even wanted to build a new city in India, Nanocity, but the project was later canceled by the HSIIDC, so he returned to what he knows best. His latest project was a free messaging service named “Jaxtr SMS”, but unlike Hotmail it wasn’t quite so successful, so he recently invested in software called “ccZen”.

Through his successful IT career, Bhatia has won many honors and awards. The most important was “Entrepreneur of the Year” in 1997, and for one of the 100 younger successful innovators called “The TR100 award”. In 2002, he was named by TIME as one of the “People to Watch” in International Business.

When it comes to Sabeer Bhatia’s personal and love life, little is known, except the fact that he has been married to Tania Sharma since 2008.
