Steve Spurrier was brought up in Tennessee as the third child of John Graham, who was a minister of the Presbyterian Church, and Marjorie Spurrier. When he was two years old, his family moved to Athens, Tennessee, where he attended Science Hill High School in Jonson City, Tennessee, after which he continued his education at the University of Florida, where he began to develop as an athlete. While he was a student, he began to play as quarterback for the team Florida Gators, then his professional football career as a player started with the 1967 NFL Draft, in which he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers, as a third overall pick. He stayed with 49ers for nine years, but couldn’t catch his rhythm, and only played as a backup quarterback to John Brodie. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing only for one season, before he retired.

However, Spurrier found a way to stay in football, only this time as a coach. His first engagement in his new career was as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Florida, but he didn’t stay long there, as he was fired when the new head coach was hired. Steve then worked as quarterbacks coach for the Georgia Tech University team, and also as the assistant coach at the Duke University. His first head coaching job came in 1987 when he was appointed as coach of the Duke Blue Devils of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Spurrier’s tenure at the Duke Blue Devils lasted only two years, but those years were successful for him, as he won two championships.

With the successful start of his career as a head coach, he was soon appointed as head coach of the Florida Gators, which increased his net worth to a large degree. Steve was a coach of the Gators for 12 years, from 1990 until 2001, and during his reign the Gators became one of the most successful college football teams. Some of the achievements include winning of the championship in 1997, and participating in another one the previous year – Steve was also named SEC Coach of the Year five times, and he also won six SEC championship.

After the 2001 season ended, Spurrier signed a $25 million five year contract with the Washington Redskins of the NFL, one of the most profitable contracts ever signed by a coach. However, he didn`t stay long in the NFL, as his results weren’t as good as the ones from the college league. After only two seasons, he returned to college and took over South Carolina Gamecocks. He served as the Gamecocks coach for ten years, writing down new history, as the South Carolina University team had its best seasons under Steve Surrier as its coach. Spurrier added several awards to his already impressive college career, winning two more SEC Coach of The Year awards in 2005 and 2010. Furthermore he won the SEC Division in 2010 with the Gamecocks.

In 2015, he decided that it’s been enough for him, and that he will stop working as a coach.

As a result of his successful career, the University of Florida inducted Steve Spurrier into its Hall of Fame, further marking his successful career.

Regarding his personal life, Steve Spurrier has been married to Jerri Starr since 1966. They were college sweethearts and now they have four children and 12 grandchildren. His oldest son Steve Jr. is currently a coach, and younger son Scott is a football player.
