Tamika is the daughter of the former NBA player Harvey Catchings. She grew up in the Chicago area where she went to Stevenson High School, and led the basketball team to the Illinois’s IHSA Div. AA State Championship. That year she received the Illinois Ms. Basketball award, becoming the youngest player ever to win. However after her sophomore year, Tamika and her family moved to Texas, and she enrolled at Duncanville High School, where Tamika continued with her basketball career, and earned honors as a WBCA All-American, and also played in the WBCA High School All-America Game, in which she scored twelve points. After matriculation, Tamika became a student at the University of Tennessee, where her career was brought up to the next level. She played for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team, and received All-American honors, winning the National championship in the 1997-1998 season.
After she obtained her diploma in 2001, Tamika declared for the WNBA Draft and was selected by the Indiana Fever as the third overall pick.
